Look at the image for a while and try to imagine the kind of story or scene it might belong in, which characters could inhabit it, and what could possibly happen here. Once you know, start writing and write for at least 30 minutes. Do not stop to edit while you are writing. Editing is for later!

The Instructions:

Take a few minutes to look at the image. While you do this, try to imagine the story that this setting could be from. And if you write poetry, try to convey the emotion of the scene. Once you have it, start writing and write for at least 30 minutes. Do not stop to edit while you are writing, as editing is for later!

The Instructions:

First look at the photo and let it inspire a story in your mind. Once you have it, start writing and write for at least 30 minutes. You should have a nice first draft to work with after you do this exercise. And it works just as well for poetry!

I know, I know, once again I have not been updating as often as I should. I have tons of excuses, from the holidays, to copywriting projects that went on forever, to novel revision (HTRYN RULES!), but really I should just make the time. And I will.

Today I though I would go with the old favorite, the picture writing prompts. You still remember how these work right? Well, just in case you forgot, the idea is that you look at the picture that I provide and allow it to tell you a story. Or to put it another way, write a story or poem based on the scene in the image. Got it? I’m sure you do so…

…here is the picture writing prompt:

The instructions:

First take a few minutes to look at the image and during this time try to imagine what kind of a world this image is from, and what kind of people inhabit this world. What is their story? Or you might wish to focus on the emotions and feelings that the image evokes in you and use that as the basis of your story or poem. Once you have it, start writing and don’t stop for at least 30 minutes. Just try to get it all out and do not revise just yet. That should be done after the first draft is complete!

I have great plans to revise and expand this site with more creative writing ideas, making it more than just a creative writing prompts blog. However, since I strongly believe that doing writing exercises are the key to becoming a better writer I will still feature at least one such exercise a week. And today we have a picture writing prompt.

So take some time to study the image. Allow the picture to tell you a story, and once you feel that you have a firm grasp on at least the beginning of this story, start writing and do not stop until the first draft is on the page. Write for at least 30 minutes, if you can, and try to not let yourself be disturbed during this time. Then go back and revise what you have written until you are satisfied that your story, poem, or flash is exactly what you want it to be.

Today it is once again time for one of my absolute favorite creative writing exercises, the picture writing prompts. I really think that these offer the most creative leeway, as far as writing prompts and exercises go, and therefore make for the best creative writing prompts. So you know how it goes: First look at the picture, try to see a story behind it and then, once you have it, start writing. Write for at least 30 minutes, and then set what you have written aside for a few days, before returning to it and editing it.
