One of the best creative writing prompts ever and certainly the first type of creative writing exercises that I personally came in contact with were writing prompts in the form of randomly chosen phrases or words from which you must then write a complete story. My first flash fiction piece, well first after a long break from writing, was written from just such, in my case 12 random phrases and words. For today’s exercise I thought I would brush off those phrases and let you write what you can out of them. Now sadly enough that particular flash of mine has still not been published (though I do consider it to be one of my best), but perhaps you all will have better luck with it.
So here is the list of phrases:
Sex Stew
The Oxford Encyclopaedia of Poo
Fear of Walking Slowly
A Very Good Friend Called V
Green-Top, Occasionally Red, Trying to Remember Jersey
Global Whoring
Black Suits You, It Matches Your Teeth
Pip
The Mysteries of the Pomegranate
Victoria, Cross
My Maidservant’s Anne
Chocolate and the Science of Seduction
So take the phrases and write your stories or poems, and don’t give up until you have a coherent first draft. Or just write for 30 minutes and then worry about fixing it later. This kind of a creative writing prompt involving phrases is perhaps better if you are trying to write a longer piece of fiction, but you are welcome to check out the rest of the creative writing prompts on this site, perhaps for later perusal:
