Creative Writing Prompts: Random Phrases to a Story #10

August 10, 2009

in Creative Writing Prompts

Random phrases, today’s creative writing prompts, are a great way to get that story or poem off the ground, since they already represent, sort of, a part of the story. Though not enough that it could not still go any which way. I am certain that if you give ten different people the same random phrases you will still come away with ten very different stories. And that is the idea behind this kind of creative writing exercise.

The random phrases:

The boat ride was long

Sleeping in the afternoon

The obsessive spider

Stormy skies

Checkers in the morning

Hot soup on a hot day

Dangerously low

I didn’t see it at all

Really, on a yacht?

Smiling at nothing

The instructions:

Read though the above phases, perhaps copy them out on a piece of paper to remember and see the story behind them better. Once you have that story firmly in you mind start writing and free write for at least 30 minutes. Use all of the phrases in your story, but the exact order is yours to choose. Only edit the story after the first draft is complete or as complete as you can make it.

Stay creative!
