Random phrases are a great way to get a story or a poem written, since they already represent a sort of backbone to it, and all you essentially need to do is fill in the blanks. With phrases this is probably most simple since so much is already there. So basically the idea behind this creative writing exercise is that you write a complete story using the given random phrases to help you along. Really easy and a great way to get over that writer’s block, if that is what you are suffering from.
The phrases:
A butterfly lives here
A dream forgotten
Still it lingers
The cup on the desk
Valerie said something
The unkempt cypress
The leaky pen
Doors open inward, I think
Yesterday or tomorrow
Again, not so much
The instructions:
Once again, read through the above phrases a few times, until you are fairly certain that a story is lurking somewhere between the lines in there. Write it out once you have it, and don’t stop until it is complete, at least the outline of it. Come back and edit it in a few days’ time.
