Once again it is time for a creative writing exercise based on random phrases as creative writing prompts, which are meant to ease you into getting a story out of your head and onto the page. Personally I enjoy this type of writing exercise very much, especially because the phrases themselves usually already have tons of meaning behind them. To me they are like little opening lines to stories in and of themselves. In general, random phrases as writing prompts are a little easier to incorporate into a story (or poem) than words or a sentence, since so much is already there to work with. There are two different way in which you can do this exercise: you can either write a story using all of the phrases in any order you wish, or you can write a story from each of the phrases. It’s up to you, just make sure you write

The phrases:
Struck dumbfounded
On a hill near the lake
Your own follower
An invitation triangle
Draw a house
Another selfish episode
Pragmatic like a colony of wolves
Foreign joy
Thin margin
I, cherub
The instructions:
As always you should first read through the above list a few times until a story starts to form in your mind. Once that happens sit down at your computer, or with a journal in hand and just start writing. Do not stop until you have finished an entire first draft of the story from the beginning to the end, no matter how sketchy it might be. In any case, try to write for at least 30 minutes. Once you are done set the writing aside for a few days then return with fresh eyes to edit it.
