Well it’s the middle of the week and what better way to celebrate that than by doing a nice little creative writing exercise to stretch that writing muscle and/or do away with that writer’s block. Today we have the random phrases creative writing prompts, and the idea behind this type of writing exercise is that you a given a set of random phrases, which you must then string together into a complete story, poem or piece of flash fiction. It’s not a difficult exercise at all, since you already have whole phrases to work with, but it works wonders in terms of writing something complete and meaningful.
The random phrases:
Passive origin
Descend beyond gloss
Winner analyzed
Cutting alongside demand
Landlord and contract
Cunning tone abandoned
Influential inferiority
Declaration featuring decreasing hope
Compression relieves shock
Fainter aging impossible
The instructions:
Read the above list of random phrases and try to imagine, divine or simply see the story, poem or flash behind them. Once you have that picture in your mind start writing and don’t stop until you have a rough draft finished. Try to write for at least 30 minutes. Use all of the phrases in any order you wish and only go back to edit your first draft once you’ve had a few hours or days to let it sit.
