Well it’s the start of another dreary autumn week, at least where I am, but that’s all the more reason to stay in and write. Especially if you are doing the NaNoWriMo 2009 challenge written about here. To get you in the writing mood we have the random phrases creative writing prompt today. The idea behind this creative writing exercise is that a set of ten random phrases are to inspire you to write an entire story or poem or more. This is great for combating writer’s block, lack of inspiration and other such problem, as the phrases act as a sort of catalyst between you and the story, allowing you to come up with setting, plot and characters without having to think too hard.
The random phrases:
Objectionable brown
Wet ladder stereotype
Tested plural
A casual matter
An overdue rank upgrade
Concern omitted
Magic committed
Able to quote
Wrong treatment, Lucy
Unwanted impression received
The instructions:
Read through the ten phrases above and try to imagine the story behind, or in the white space between, them. Once you are sure that there is such a story and that you can write it, start to do so. Write for at least 30 minutes and use all of the phrases in your first draft. In a few days, reread and edit what you have written.
