Creative Writing Prompts: Random Phrases to a Story #3

in Creative Writing Prompts

Today it is again time to free write a story, poem or flash fiction piece using a set of predefined, given random phrases as story triggers. This creative writing exercise allows for a lot of creativity and not that much planning as the story just sort of unfolds from the phrases and everything is tied together nicely and neatly. In general, creative writing prompts are a great way to practice writing as they do not require much preparation, nor do they require you to focus on any one area of creative writing, like some more focused creative writing exercises do. In other words, if you want to practice plotting, descriptions, tone, characterization or the like then you need to do the creative writing exercises, which are designed to hone those skills, while writing exercises based on creative writing prompts are merely designed to get you to start writing and to get you in the habit of daily writing. But enough of the theory…

So here is this week’s list of random phrases as creative writing prompts:

implausible embarrass
condensed double
cheers circa 1900
specially sink
integrate and simplify
singing relationship
global substituting inearth
autumn force deuce
shaken pacifier golly
oversweet close hell
accumbent open clapping
sans predecessor pickaxe

Instructions:

Write a story, poem or flash using these 12 random phrases prompts. After you get the initial idea as to what you want to write about, sit down and write for at least half an hour, but try for longer and definitely make sure that you finish the first draft in one sitting. Then a few days later go back and revise what you have written. At this point, do not worry too much about retaining all the original phrases, you can freely cut some of them out. After you are satisfied that the story is finished, consider getting some reviews of it to see what others think. I suggest signing up at the for the writing workshop on www.zoetrope.com. It’s free and I have gotten some very valuable feedback from the members there.
