by Vanja on June 29, 2009

Well, it’s been a long weekend so I hope you are ready to do some serious creative writing exercises today as well as for the rest of the week. To ease you into it all, I have a nice little random phrases creative writing prompts exercise for you today. The idea behind this exercise is is to write a story, poem or a piece of flash fiction using all of the given phrases. But the story that you write must have a beginning, middle and an end! This creative writing exercise is pretty easy because you have a sort of frame of the story already given and all you really need to do is connect all of the random phrases into a story. Great for practice, which is what writers should do-practice writing that is!

The random phrases:

the captain was given a bolt

with an imperialist discouraging takeoff

below they argue which argue pathway

and on a less brutish note

do the limitless prefer a pigpen?

the passing initiated passionately

rebelling respectfully

the letter was sent, the mail was shipped

Ralph had questions

I was glad to win, not happy for the losers though

The instructions:

Read through the list of the above phrases then copy and past them into a blank document (or write them our by hand, whichever you prefer). Focus your mind on the phrases for as long as it takes for your imagination to form a story in your mind. Once this happens start writing immediately and don’t stop until you have the first draft of your story or poem complete. In the first sitting you should use all of the given random phrases, but once you start editing the story you may cut things out at will. And even if you have writer’s block just try this process out and you’ll see just how much it helps to just write your way through it. So get started and…

Stay creative!
