Creative Writing Prompts: Random Words to a Story #13

by Vanja on August 7, 2009

Being given a set of random words from which to write a complete story is another great way to get rid of that writer’s block and get some great stories onto the page. Being faced with a blank piece of paper or a blank virtual document on a computer screen can send anyone to go do some other chores and forget about writing. That is why words prompts are so great since they already give you some words to work with i.e. the page is no longer blank. The idea here is that you string these words together into a whole story.

The words:

1. Telephone
2. Car
3. Strike
4. Electricity
5. Screen
6. Fan
7. Mauve
8. Eyes
9. DVD
10. Towel

The instructions:

Read through the above list and will a story into being from the given random words. Once you are fairly confident that you have the beginning of a story, or poem, or flash, firmly in your grasp start writing and don’t stop until the first attempt or draft is complete. Try to write for at least 30 minutes in any case and only go back to edit the story, or poem, or flash the next day or the week after that.

Stay creative!
