Creative Writing Prompts: Story Starter Sentence #8

by Vanja on June 30, 2009

Today we have another quickie, but goody. The story starter sentence creative writing prompt or story trigger. The idea behind this great creative writing exercise is that you are given a random sentence which you must write a story, poem, flash, or what ever around. You can use this sentence as the first sentence of the story or anywhere in the middle of it, just as long as you do use it. Remember, it is only a “story starter” sentence because it is supposed to get your imagination to come up with a plot. This kind of creative writing exercise is also great for “curing” writer’s block, so if that is what you are suffering from you should get started on some creative writing prompts right away!

The story starter sentence:

The instructions:

Read the above sentence a few times until a story starts to form in your mind around it. Write that story out, in one sitting, from the beginning through the middle right to the end. You should aim to write for at least 30 minutes. And remember this is only a first draft so it is OK if it a little skeletal, with things not as fleshed out as they should be. Leave that for the second and the third draft, which you should attempt only a few days after you finish the first draft.

Stay creative!
